On cutting trees an what not to do!

Sat Sep 26, 2009, 10:00 AM
Good day to you all!

So here it is going into fall and you would no no it judging by the weather here. These past couple off weeks it has beeen sunny an unseasonably warm, eighties to nineties. Nice to be sure. I loved it.

So as to the title of this her journal. It goes something like this, I go out to cut some trees out of the group of tress across from the house in the one side of the field we had planted to treees in the early eighties. I cut the first two trees of the three my father wanted down no prob, and get them all limbed up. Then comes the biggest of the three, I cut the notch at the base to guide the direction of the fall(called the face), do the the back cut above the face and watch the tree twist and fall to far to the right and wedge itself nice and firmly into the one in front of it. Tnn I cuss and swear at my stupidity for facing it wrong and doing the back cut incorrectly cause I know what a pain it well be trying to get a roughly 40 foot tree unwedged and down. It was over afoot across at the base and several thousand pounds. I looked at it and than grabbed a rope we use fro pulling trees as we cut them to guide them and tried to pull the stuck base off the stump to hopefully drop the top, but i pulled and pulled and nothing! So I went and grabbed sledge hammer and knocked it of the stump and it promptly wedged the but end into the dirt and stuck the top even tighter. I beat on it some more to no avail.

I waited till my father got home and then had him come out and see what he could do, he did logging for a living when he was my age and cut down trees that were several hundreds of feet tall and six or seven feet around at the base in all sorts of conditions and settings. He cut about a six foot section out of it and the rest promptly fell straight down at the butt end and the top wedged itself into the tree next to the one it had been wedged in before. he cut another six foot section out and it promptly fell down and back and wedged the top into the tree behind it. it was short and slight enough at the point we wrapped a rope around it and pulled it down. I finished limbing it up and told myself next tie I would be very careful to make sure I did everything just right so I would not have all the extra work and create another dangerous situation such as this. Anytime you wedge a tree like this you risk harming yourself because you can not predict what can happen when you try to undo it. We were able to do what we did because the tree was a small one but larger ones can pose series hazzards for loggers. Limbs can become projectiles as it slams into the other tree and the pressur snaps the limbs off, the tree can bow back and land on the cutter, the secton the has been cut lose at the top can fall down on the logger or roll backwards like ours did. All in all a very bad thing. So yeah not putting trees in other trees is the recommended procedure when cutting them down.

Aside from this gem my life has been going just peachy, I have a steady job, money in the bank and have my bills paid, roof over my head and three squares a day! About all thats missing is a friendly companion I can share my life with, but hey all good things come to those who wait! Plus its not quit ideal yet. You all take care and may you have ll that you need and want. Have a most excellent day!
